What the hell is SEO?
In recent years, thanks to the ever-increasing pace of technology, the way in which businesses market and promote themselves has been, like so many things, completely revolutionised. Social media is now one of the most effective ways of communicating your brand message, and connecting with your target audience. The internet has become the digital playground of the masses, and nowadays, if your company doesn’t have a strong digital presence, your brand message is unlikely to reach the people that matter most – consumers.
However, whilst many companies are catching on to this fact, there are still those who are wondering just exactly where to start. The answer is quite simple; SEO, or Search Engine Optimisation, is the practice of making your website more visible on Google’s PageRank system. Whereas in the not too distant past there were all kinds of unethical ways of getting your web content to rank higher, nowadays Google is much better at being able to determine which websites actually offer informative, quality content, and which are simply rehashing info that can already be found elsewhere on the web.
The primary way in which they’ve improved the way the search engine behemoth functions is by frequently tweaking and updating its algorithms, so that it can detect which web pages are most informative and relevant to the search terms used, and only list those results. Ultimately, SEO is there to improve user experience and make the internet a more reliable and authoritative source of information. Although many people delay using SEO or SEO services, concerned that it’s all just too complicated, the reality is that as long as you remember the golden rule, that ‘Content is King’, and that the quality of content matters above all else, you can’t go far wrong.
